Hatters win White Rose Derby

City of Sheffield Hatters returned to South Yorkshire with the points after winning in Leeds

Women’s National League Division One

Saturday 20 March 2010 - Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie University.

Leeds Carnegie 69 City Of Sheffield Hatters 78

With the League title secured last weekend, Hatters travelled North to Leeds to compete the White Rose Derby, aiming to keep their winning streak going. Leeds also had plenty to play for, going into the game still in contention for a third place finish. The game was always sure to be a hard fought contest between two very competitive sides, and with Leeds streaming the game live on the internet, and a high number of Carnegie fans, the game was intense from the offset.

Both teams failed to put points on the board in the first few minutes - possibly due to an error in ball size. Hatters quickly got in their stride putting the games first points on the board pressuring the hosts and forcing errors. Hatters executed offences well and this, combined with some sloppy Leeds defence, meant Sheffield got some easy wide open shots.

Meanwhile, Leeds’ offence was centred around Loui Hall, arguably one of the best post players in the league, who rarely missed from under the bucket, keeping the home side in contention. Despite her success Hatters led at the end of the first 22-14.

The second quarter became much scrappier with Leeds fouling more defensively. Sheffield also stepped up their levels of aggression but seemed to be penalised more for doing so, sending Leeds to the line on several occasions. With both sides adding points, an entertaining second quarter was tied at 24 all leaving the score 38-46 at half time.

The third quarter was lower scoring as the game became a little out of control as levels of contact increased yet again. Sheffield started the quarter strongly, as they made good fast breaks and found the gap in Leeds’ zone along the baseline. The momentum then switched to Leeds’ favour and Hatter’s made some unforced passing turnovers against the host’s zone, and allowing Carnegie within 10 points. Hatters stepped up the pace again, led by some very strong play from Mason driving in against the zone and playing through unusually high levels of contact. The third quarter ended with Vanessa Ellis’s side leading by eleven at 51-62.

Carnegie stepped up the pressure in the final quarter and they managed to reduce the deficit within ten points. With both teams continuing to exchange baskets, Hatters made good tactical use of time and were able to run out the clock to secure another win, 78-69.

Top scorers: Mason 24, Hutchinson 14, Oaddams 12

With just one week of the regular season left, Hatters lead the table by four points, from UWIC Archers who secured second spot with a victory over Nottingham Wildcats.

Vanessa Ellis’s side complete their League programme when they visit Brixton Topcats. The game will be played at Brixton Recreational Centre on Sunday with a 2pm tip
